Gwadar remained under the possession of Oman until 1958 in 1783. Chabahar, the sister city port, is situated 170 km west to Gwadar. In 1954, The United States Geographical Survey revealed that Gawadar port has all the attributes to be enlisted as the deepest water ports in the world. It was still under Omani rule during this survey. By realizing its importance, Pakistan made an effort to buy it from the Romanian ruler. On 8 September 1958, for US$ 3 million Pakistan purchased the Gwadar enclave from Oman after four years of successful negotiations. Officially, Gwadar came under the territory of Pakistan on 8 December 1958 after 20 decades of Omani rule.
Pervez Musharraf, Military Dictator and President of Pakistan, inaugurated the port when its first phase of construction was completed in 2007, at the expense of $248 million.
CPEC, China’s government multi mega project changed the economic destiny of Pakistan. In 2015, china made an agreement with Pakistan to invest $1.62 billion in the development of Gwadar port under the umbrella of CPEC.
On 14 November 2016, the port become formally functional after it was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
