The planning and Development Board of Punjab has approved the PC1 of the remodeling Rawalpindi Kuchery Chowk Remodeling Project worth 3.84 billion and has sent the same to the Bridge Directorate of the Highway Department for further assessment. With the Ammar Chowk Project almost completed, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has requested the government to initiate Kucheri Chowk Project before starting the Work on the defense Project, Rawalpindi Ring Road Construction Project, and LEH Expressway Development Project as the congestion of traffic at Kucheri Chowk seriously hampers the everyday activities of the daily commuters of the twin cities.
Earlier this month a senior officer of the RDA had told the newsmen that after the completion of the Ammar Chowk the government has been requested to start Kucheri Chowk. “ The civic body requested the government to first start Kutchery Chowk and then take up Defence Chowk remodeling and transfer the money allocated for Defence Chowk to Kutchery Chowk project as it was more important”, The official was reported to have said. The senior officer also told that earlier the civic body was planning to start work on both Kucheri Chowk and Defence Chowk but keeping in mind the possible traffic issues in case both the projects are started at the same time, they have halted the work on defense chowk and decided to complete Kucheri Chowk first.
The senior official also told the RDA has demanded Rs 1.8 billion urgently so that the work on the project could be started by early next year. In this regard, the civic body has requested the Punjab government to shift the allocated amount for Defence Chowk to the Kucheri Chowk allocation as the work on Defence Chowk is currently not possible. The official also told the newsmen that the civic body intended to make flyovers at the Chowk but keeping in mind the security reservation by the garrison authority the civic body has decided to construct an underpass that will connect The Mall and Airport Road with the Mall and Jehlum Road.
