Islamabad: A report of the Auditor General of Pakistan has revealed that the two real estate tycoons namely Bahria Town and DHA have encroached upon at least 785 kanals of estate land along the Karachi –Hyderabad Motorway (M-9). The auditor general of Pakistan has noted that Bahria Town Karachi has encroached on 491 kanals of estate land while the Defence Housing Authority has illegally utilized 491 kanals of government property along the National Highway Authority.

The auditors have reported that Bahria Town Karachi has used 491 Kanal of estate land for the construction of the interchange without any approval of the NHA authorities or without reaching any agreement with the NHA. It was also observed by the auditors that the DHA City also constructed an interchange and access road at NHA’s Land/Right of Way at M-9 Karachi and used around 3km of government land on either side of the Motorway. The report said, “294-Kanal (land) was illegally utilized by DHA without any approval of NHA authorities and without entering into a lease agreement with NHA.”

Karachi Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) is a 6-lane 136-kilometer-long road constructed between 2015 and 2018 by expanding the existing Superhighway. The motorway also caters to commercial traffic from Karachi Port to Port Qasim. As per reports, this matter was reported by the auditor general in May-June 2021 but the NHA has not replied to it as yet. The auditor general had recommended an inquiry into the matter for fixing responsibility and besides recovery of the dues.
