Govt Punjab Decided to Hire Consultant for Rawalpindi Ring Road 

Rawalpindi: The Punjab government has decided to hire a consultant to
determine the optimal route for the much-delayed Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR)
project. This was decided in a meeting of the Consultant Selection Committee
Presided over by Commissioner Rawalpindi Nurul Amin Mengal. The consultant
will be hired within 3 months for the 3 rd party evaluation of one of the two
available routes as well as to set up an economic corridor along the route.

The meeting was also attended by the senior officials of the finance, planning,
highway department, DG RDA, and Chief Engineer RDA. The consultancy firm. The
committee decided, would determine the optimal route keeping in mind the
economic corridor in Phase 1. In Phase 2 detailed planning would be carried out
for land use along the third-party validated alignment of the ring road route. The
official said, “For the two phases, Rs90 million have been allocated, including Rs30
million for Phase-I and Rs60 million for Phase II.”

It was informed by the RDA official that the economic activities along the route of
the RRR include education and health zones, central business districts, theme
parks, recreational areas, high-rise building zones, and relocation and
establishment of truck/bus terminals and commercial markets. Earlier the federal
government had decided on the five main projects to fetch foreign investment
after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to the UAE. These projects also include
Rawalpindi Ring Road and Kharian Rawalpindi Motorway. The federal government
is interested to execute the RRR through foreign investment.
