Rawalpindi: A new design of Rawalpindi Kucherry Chowk has been approved by
the provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) in order to minimize public
worries on the main junction of the city. The 6.422 billion revised remodeling
project will be completed in two years and will provide an easy way to 131,500
vehicles per day. Earlier the cost of the project was 4.87bn with a daily

A senior official of the planning and development division told that a rationalized
cost of Rs4.879 billion was cleared at a meeting held on March 7, 2022, but now
the RDA has come up with a revised PC-I due to the revised scope. The new PC-1,
he said, with the addition of a flyover of Y-shaped to cater to the traffic from
Rawat to Saddar, Saddar to Rawat, and Marrir Chowk to Rawat. He added that
Under the project, the first level underpass will be constructed for Saddar to the
old airport and from there to Saddar. In the previous design, there was a level-2
underpass for Saddar to Rawat and Saddar to the airport with a total of six lanes.

The RDA was waiting for the completion of the Ammar Chowk project so that the
smooth flow of traffic could be ensured.  The civic body had requested the
government to first start Kutchery Chowk and then take up Defence Chowk
remodeling and transfer the money allocated for Defence Chowk to Kutchery
Chowk project as it was more important and essential to overcome the traffic
issues faced by the daily commuters of the twin cities. The Kucherry chowk is
among the busiest squares of the city as the congestion of traffic at Kucheri
Chowk seriously hampers the smooth flow of traffic in the city.
